Lineup Optimization: Risk Profiles in Hit and RBI Markets

A few seasons ago I made the mistake of treating hits, total bases, and RBI props as interchangeable. They all measure something the hitter does at the plate. The lines all hover around the same numbers. They are all priced in the same shape. So I bet them as if they were the same market, sized them the same, and was somewhat startled at the end of the year to find that one of the three was a strong winner, one was break-even, and one was a clear loser.

These three counting-stat props share surface features but they are mechanically different markets with different optimal selection criteria. Hits props depend on plate-appearance volume and contact quality, but they cap out around three hits – a hitter going 4-for-4 still only resolves the over on 2.5 hits the same way as 3-for-3. Total bases depend on extra-base hit probability and home run exposure, with massive variance because a single HR jumps you from 1 to 4 bases instantly. RBI props depend on lineup spot, baserunners ahead, and the specific game situations the hitter walks up to – almost a third party of variables compared to hits and total bases.

Treating them as one market dilutes the focus you can bring to any single one. The maths and the matchup analysis that produces value on a hits prop is genuinely different from the analysis that produces value on an RBI prop. Tony Clark, the executive director of the MLB Players Association, observed in late 2025 that the union was in support of removing any types of bets, prop or otherwise, that could create issues for the players on the field, having been concerned about prop bets from day one. The micro-bet regulations that followed reshaped pitch-level props but left hitter counting-stat props largely intact – which means they remain a viable market segment for serious bettors, with their own quirks that reward careful segmentation rather than blanket treatment.

Over/under hits: the lineup-spot problem

The hits prop is the most common hitter counting-stat market. The bookmaker sets a line – typically 0.5, 1.5, or 2.5 hits for a single starter, with Over/Under sides priced around even money on either side of 1.91 decimal.

The most important variable in hits prop analysis is lineup spot, because it directly controls plate-appearance volume. A leadoff hitter averages 4.5 plate appearances per game. An eighth-place hitter averages 3.5. That one extra plate appearance per game is roughly 25% more opportunity to record a hit. The hits prop line should adjust for lineup spot, and the market generally does, but the adjustment is sometimes lagging when a hitter is moved up or down the order.

The second variable is the opposing pitcher’s hits-allowed profile. Some pitchers limit contact entirely through high strikeout rates (K/9 above 10.0) and hit a lot of “no-hit” or “low-hit” games. Others give up plenty of contact but limit extra-base damage – the soft-tossing strike thrower who pitches to weak contact. The first type makes hits prop Unders attractive; the second type makes hits prop Overs attractive because the contact is happening, the question is just whether it falls in for hits versus outs.

The third variable is the hitter’s batting average against the specific handedness. A hitter posting .280 overall might be .310 against right-handers and .220 against left-handers. The hits prop line is set from the overall average, with a partial adjustment for handedness. Hitters with extreme splits provide the biggest edges relative to the line.

One trap to watch for: hits prop Unders on hitters at 0.5 hits look attractive but are deceptively brittle. The bet wins only if the hitter goes 0-for-the-game. A single bloop single, a defensive misplay called a hit, a check-swing roller that nobody fields – any of these resolves the Under as a loss. The variance on a 0.5-hits Under is much higher than the price suggests, because so many random events can produce one cheap hit.

Total bases: hidden HR exposure

Total bases is a single-numerical-line prop counting the total bases a hitter records: 1 for a single, 2 for a double, 3 for a triple, 4 for a home run. Walks do not count. The typical line for a regular hitter sits at 1.5 total bases, with Over and Under priced around 1.91.

The structural feature that makes total bases different from hits is the home run multiplier. A single home run produces 4 total bases on its own. That single swing immediately resolves any Over on 1.5, 2.5, or 3.5 total bases. The HR exposure is what gives total bases higher variance than hits, and it is also what gives the Over its asymmetric upside.

For betting analysis, this means total bases lines react more sensitively to power-profile inputs than hits lines do. A hitter facing a high-HR/9 pitcher at a hitter-friendly park with wind blowing out has total bases value that the hits line might not capture, because the hits line responds mostly to contact quality while the total bases line responds to both contact quality and the small-probability-but-huge-impact possibility of a home run.

The Under side of total bases is correspondingly riskier than the hits Under. A hitter on the Under needs to record fewer than 1.5 total bases (so at most a single, or zero hits) AND avoid hitting a home run. One swing of the bat can wipe out an Under that was looking comfortable through three at-bats. This is why I rarely take total bases Unders on confirmed power hitters even when the pitcher matchup looks unfavourable.

The bookmaker’s total bases pricing is sharper than hits pricing on average, partly because the market has more public interest (players love the home-run-equivalent payouts on Overs) and partly because the modelling problem is harder for the casual bettor. Edges in total bases require careful Statcast work, similar to HR props but with the slight complication that extra-base hits other than HRs also count.

RBI: the most variance-driven of the three

RBIs are runs batted in. A hitter records an RBI when they bring a baserunner home with a hit, a walk, a sacrifice, an error, or by hitting a home run themselves. The prop line typically sits at 0.5 RBIs or 1.5 RBIs depending on the hitter’s lineup spot and the matchup.

RBIs depend on something hitters do not directly control: baserunners. A hitter walking up with the bases empty cannot record any RBIs no matter how hard they hit the ball, unless they hit a home run. A hitter walking up with runners on first and second has multiple paths to an RBI. The hitter’s RBI total is therefore part hitter quality, part lineup context (whoever is hitting in front of them and how often those hitters are on base), and part game-situation variance.

The lineup-spot effect on RBIs is more complex than on hits or total bases. A leadoff hitter gets the most plate appearances but tends to walk up with the fewest runners on base. A clean-up hitter (fourth in the order) gets slightly fewer plate appearances but tends to walk up with more runners on base because the top three hitters have been on base ahead of them. The traditional 3-4-5 spots in the lineup are the highest-RBI-opportunity spots, even though they get fewer plate appearances than the leadoff spot.

From a betting perspective, this makes RBI props the most variance-driven of the three counting-stat markets. The same hitter against the same pitcher can post 0 RBIs in one game and 4 in the next purely based on whether the lineup ahead of them got on base. The bookmaker’s RBI line accounts for the hitter’s expected RBI per game based on lineup spot and matchup, but the noise around that expectation is enormous.

The setup where RBI props become more reliable is a hot top-of-the-order paired with a power hitter in the clean-up spot. When the leadoff and two-hole hitters are getting on base 38% of the time over the last month, and the clean-up hitter has a power profile, the RBI prop Over on the clean-up hitter has structurally higher base probability than the season-average line suggests. The market sometimes lags on hot streaks of the front of the order, which is where the edge appears.

Why combining all three on one hitter is a bad bet

Bookmakers now offer “hitter parlays” – combining hits Over, total bases Over, and RBI Over on the same player into a single ticket. The price looks tempting: a hitter expected to go 1-for-3 might be 1.91 on hits Over 0.5, 2.10 on total bases Over 1.5, and 2.30 on RBI Over 0.5. The parlay combines these three Overs into something like 5.50 to 1 – a glamorous-looking price.

The problem is correlation that the bookmaker is partly aware of and partly not. If the hitter gets a single base hit with a runner on second, all three Overs cash at once. If the hitter goes 0-for-3, all three Unders cash at once. The outcomes are heavily correlated, which means the true fair price for the parlay is much closer than the bookmaker’s pricing suggests. The book carries enough vig in each leg that even with their correlation adjustment, you are paying a steep premium.

The cleaner play is to identify which of the three counting-stat props has the highest edge in this specific matchup and bet that one directly, sized appropriately. The parlay obscures the analysis by combining multiple bets where one might have edge and the others probably do not. A single-leg total bases bet at 2.10 with a 5% edge is far better long-term than a three-leg parlay at 5.50 with combined vig of 25%+.

This same logic extends to the broader bet-builder products that UK bookmakers have pushed hard in recent years. The bet-builder market on MLB is mechanically similar to a same-game parlay – and the same correlation-pricing issues apply, which is exactly what makes the SGP market on MLB so heavily shaded against the bettor.

Picking the right counting stat for the right matchup

The three hitter counting-stat props are not interchangeable. Each rewards a different kind of matchup analysis and each carries different variance profiles. Hits props reward contact quality and plate-appearance volume; they have the smoothest variance and the cleanest Statcast inputs. Total bases props reward power profile and park-pitcher context; they have moderate variance and a structural Over-lean from HR exposure. RBI props reward lineup context and game-situation luck; they have the highest variance and the most market mispricing potential when the top of the order is hot. A serious counting-stat bettor specialises in one of the three and grinds it across the season. A casual bettor switches between them based on which “feels right” tonight and bleeds vig steadily. The market rewards specialists. It does not reward generalists.

Are top-of-order hitters always the best total-bases bets?

No. Top-of-order hitters get more plate appearances but tend to be selected for on-base skill rather than power. The best total-bases setups are usually clean-up or fifth-place hitters with high barrel rates facing homer-prone pitchers, where the HR exposure on the Over is the most asymmetric.

Should I prefer hits or total bases?

It depends on the hitter profile. For singles-and-doubles contact hitters with low HR rates, hits Overs are the cleaner play because total bases is essentially just hits with extra noise. For power hitters with strong Statcast profiles, total bases Overs capture the asymmetric upside that hits Overs miss.
